Character Education at Langholm Academy – Vistas Day 2016

There has been considerable research into the impact of Character Education on pupil attainment and evidence shows that resilience, confidence and self-awareness all contribute to improved academic achievement. Vistas Day is our introduction to Character Education in S1.

On February 4th 2016 The whole of S1 took part in ‘Vistas day’. They experienced a range of workshops exploring what it is to be human. Vistas Day was a fun way for pupils to explore their roots, the values that they hold dear and consider the kinds of aspirations they have. Workshops included:

Altruism with Miss Hughes – the gift of giving: Making a bar of lovely soap which can be given to someone who will benefit from your thoughts and hard work. Bunting

Reflection bunting with Miss Huntington - A creative way to express a number of different events in your life and how you felt at that time. We will use colour and shapes to express your feelings and memories, all displayed as bunting.

Mindfulness with Mrs Z Brown – Calm reflection. Peace and quiet. Time to just be.

Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) with Ms Storey - A Danish word that is a feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, everyday things more meaningful, beautiful or special.

Music and colour with Ms Berker & Mr German- Pick a piece of music and paint it! (music and colour/texture are linked to express moods or feelings)

"All about me cake” with Mrs Nicol and Mrs Dempster- Design and make 3 cakes that represent you.

Identity through art and words with Ms McGuiness and Mr German - The purpose of the workshop is to make you feel good about yourself because exploring yourself using words and pictures is a wonderful way to gain a better understanding of yourself and to build your confidence.

Tai Chi with Mrs Forsyth – Mindful movement for relaxation

Creative writing with Ms Ford - Write a poem or a short story about yourself, a friend or a family member.
